Biography: Desmond Doss was a United States Army corporal who served as a combat medic during World War II. He earned the Bronze Star twice for his actions in Guam and the Philippines, then at the Battle of Okinawa saved 75 men. His actions at Okinawa made him the only conscientious objector ever to receive the Medal of Honor.

Doss was a Seventh-day Adventist and because of these beliefs refused to kill or even carry a weapon. This led to his being assigned as a medic with the 307th Infantry. During his time as a medic he was recognized multiple times for his extraordinary bravery in aiding wounded soldiers under fire.

A documentary titled The Conscientious Objector (2004) and a film titled Hacksaw Ridge (2016) have been made based on Doss's life and deeds. In the latter he was portrayed by Andrew Garfield.
